Iced Hibiscus Tea – Agua de Jamáica

A beautiful sweet tart tea to refresh on any hot day!!  Traditional to México, Agua de jamáica is served all over the country, it’s naturally bright red color distinctive and gorgeous.  I fell in love with this iced hibiscus tea and think you will too!

My version uses either honey, low carb sweeteners, or organic sugar as you choose!  So if you are following a keto diet, or prefer to use unrefined sugars, this recipe is for you!

All natural, and good for you, make this refreshing vibrant iced tea with strawberries and lime today!

I spent many months in the country of México as young teacher.  I was introduced to loads of new and wonderful foods, culture, and experiences.

Agua de jamáica has been one of my very favorite treats ever since being introduced to it all those years ago.  Hibiscus tea is quite tart…so when you marry it with tart lime, and tart strawberries, you get a wonderfully puckery drink that people go nuts over!

When you sweeten this, it will definitely be to taste!

I try to minimize my sugar intake, but have made this with organic cane sugar occasionally too.  Most recently, I used Lankanto’s Monk Fruit Sweetener and some stevia glycerite for a low carb version.  I always find that by using the two keto sweeteners together, I minimize the aftertaste of each.

Reusable straws – say no to plastic whenever possible!!

We use reusable straws now, as plastic straws are a serious waste issue worldwide.  We all can make a difference by using more responsible straws whenever possible!  I have 2 that regularly use and love:

  • Eco At Heart Stainless Steel Straws…we have the smoothie ones!  They clean beautifully are pretty too!!
  • Paper Straws – festive…but left in liquid they will turn soft as any paper would!

Health benefits of hibiscus tea

  • Because their vibrant red hue, you know there will loads of antioxidants to combat those free radicals!!
  • May help lower blood pressure, and there is some great studies out there supporting this!
  • May help with maintaining healthy blood sugar levels
  • Can potentially help support healthy triglyceride levels

Healthy Green Savvy wrote more about the benefits here.

How to make hibiscus tea

Hibiscus tea is quite simple to make.  By using the whole dried  flowers, you can quickly steep them in just boiled water for 10-20 minutes.  You then strain the flowers off, and do what you like with your vibrant red  liquid!

As an alternative, you can use prepared hibiscus tea bags if that is more your jam!!

More hibiscus recipes:

  • Hibiscus Rose Hip Marshmallows are made with honey!
  • Hibiscus tacos?!  I am so intrigued!
  • Use the dried flowers to make a tea for kombucha!  You could use the dried flowers after you have some homemade kombucha to flavor it, like in this post.

More keto recipes?

Here are a couple of my own recipes that are perfect for the keto menu….or ANY menu!  Serve with a tall glass of this hibiscus sweet tea!

  • No Bake Keto Protein Bars
  • Instant Pot Carnitas
  • Creamy Keto Chocolate Shake

Another equally refreshing beverage would be this pineapple and cucumber juice!

I was trying to make it then my boiler blew, I was very disappointed. I ended up using my stove, and it was still so good! I’m glad I stuck with the recipe!

I’m so mad I forgot to get hibiscus tea at the store today, I was really wanting to make this this weekend!! I might have to make an extra trip back to the city to get some, plus I can pick up some more chocolate chips while I’m there… my son got into them when I wasn’t looking and ate the ENTIRE bag!!!
    Can’t wait to make this!
