Dairy Free Artichoke Dip

A Whole30, keto, and paleo hot dairy free artichoke dip for your next party!  You would think a ton of dairy would be needed to make this creamy goodness, but think again!

a circular red ceramic dish filled with baked artichoke dip with a almond and chive topping

I have been wanting to create a dairy free hot artichoke dip that I could have too.  After all, I love hot dips as  much as the  next person!

All of my old favorites were of course laden with dairy of all varieties (one with goat cheese was my favorite, because really…it’s goat cheese!!).

Here is a hot, creamy dip free of dairy and destined to please a crowd.

I have made this for multiple gatherings and everyone always raves.

bowl filled with a bubbling hot artichoke dip topped with almonds and a sprig of chives

Hot artichoke dip ingredient notes:

  • The success in this dip, in my opinion, is the taste and quality of the mayonnaise you use!  While store bought varieties are available now (Chosen Foods avocado mayo for example), we LOVE and prefer my homemade mayo.  It is far superior to any store bought and takes under 5 minutes to prepare…in the same food processor bowl you’ll use for making the dip anyways (I am working on an egg free version too!)!
  • If you do not tolerate eggs, check out this recipe for a  Vegan Mayonnaise (I would use light olive oil and unsweetened non-dairy milk)
  • Or this nut based mayo is also egg free @ Elana’s Pantry

Can I make a dairy free spinach artichoke dip?

Of course!  If you’d like to thrown in some chopped fresh spinach OR some frozen and drained (squeezed dry) chopped spinach…go for it!

Here a couple more dairy free appetizers for you!

  • Make an eggplant lover today: Smoky Israeli Eggplant Dip – it certainly changed MY mind about eggplant!
  •  Perfect for dipping: Dairy Free Real Food Nacho Cheese Sauce
  • Whole30 Buffalo Chicken Dip could almost be a meal with all the protein!
  • Paleo Spinach Dip is a classic party dip!

Ingredients

  • 2 14 oz cans artichoke hearts or hearts of palm NOT the marinated ones! Frozen artichoke hearts that have been thawed would work too!
  • 1 clove minced garlic use a large clove!
  • 2 tablespoons very finely minced onion
  • 3/4 cup mayonnaise Using my quick homemade mayo is what sets this dip over the top!! A low quality mayo will not yield the same amazing results.
  • 1/4 cup plain dairy free yogurt I use So Delicious Plain Greek Yogurt orginally, and love Forager Cashew Milk Yogurt too
  • 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

TOPPING:

  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • In the bowl of a food processor, pulse the drained artichokes until diced.
  • Add in the remaining ingredients and pulse until combined.
  • Spoon into an 8 x 8 pan (the size is not overly important...you will cook until bubbly and warm regardless)
  • Sprinkle top with the sliced almonds.
  • Bake for about 30-40 minutes until hot and bubbly.

Hi there, would this work without the dairy? How far in advance can this be made? I’m having a party on Saturday but want to do what I can during the week.

It can be made with your favorite dairy free yogurt. I either use my homemade, Forager Cashewgurt, or originally I use so delicious plain.
Definitely can be made in advance!

How do you consider this dairy free when an ingredient in it is YOGURT?? I was ready to make this, then had to slam on the brakes. How disappointing! What if I made this and presented it to my very dairy allergic friend (who is the reason I searched up this recipe to begin with) — only to send her over the edge with symptoms from yogurt in the dip?!

Hi Suze…I used coconut milk yogurt, as stated in the recipe card. I really like Cashewgurt too. I have readers with all sorts of various food allergies, which is why I list options.

You call this “dairy free” and then call for Greek yogurt. Strange

Yes Aron, I used coconut milk Greek yogurt the first few times, I now use Cashewgurt by Forager, both dairy free!

Yum! Had a bunch of canned artichokes that were soon to expire so I decided to make this dip. Gonna reheat it tonight and serve it as an appetizer to family dinner. I used store bought mayo because it’s what I had , but look forward to trying with homemade mayo. How long will it keep in the fridge? It made a generous helping, more than we’ll be able to eat tonight. Also, what should I reheat it at tonight? 275?
I almost want to turn it up more so the almonds on top get more crispy.

you can’t really overcook this, so cook it up until it achieves your desired crispiness!! Reheat at same temp! And wait until you try it with homemade mayo….to die for!

This sounds SO good!!! I love hot artichoke dip but can’t do dairy. I love that nutritional yeast in there, it’s so awesome for helping give recipes that cheesy flavor. I can’t wait to try this.

Hi Mindy…not sure where you live? But we find it at 3 of the 4 stores we shop at, and I also order it through my bulk buying club. I have seen soy, alomnd, goat, and coconut milk plain choices, and sometimes the greek style coconut! Whole Foods, New Seasons, and Fred Meyer all have it for us.

You know how some of us can get used to using certain vegetables, without ever considering trying to cook with a new one? Well that’s me when it comes to artichokes, so I’m going to break from a habit of a lifetime and experiment with this vegetable-once and for all, as this recipe looks too yummy to ignore! Rebecca x
